The Different Gas Caps

The following are the various classifications of gas caps.

The color different for fuel

The black fuel caps indicate that they are designed to run on gasoline with less than 10 percent ethanol content, they are petrol fuel caps.

The green fuel caps mean they run on diesel, they are diesel fuel caps.

The yellow fuel caps, you’ll find a yellow cap under the fuel door if your car or truck needs gasoline with anywhere from 15 to 85 percent ethanol content, they are flexible fuel vehicles caps.

The classic cap and cap-less gas cap

There are different types of gas caps, ranging from slow-release to cap-less. However, the gas caps for all types of vehicles are replaceable, but the gasoline filler caps are not fully universal. The filler neck sizes for all vehicles vary by make and model.

Slow-release gas cap

Some gas caps have a warning label on them, stating, “open slowly.” This is to ensure that vapors are released slowly and not in a sudden poof. This is especially important on warmer days because gas is more susceptible to being turned into vapors.

Cap-less gas cap

For those driving brand new vehicles, usually a 2019 model or newer, you may find that there is not even a cap anymore when you open the gas valve. This is the newest version of the gas cap, the cap-less gas cap.

The non-locking fuel caps and locking fuel caps

Some gas caps can be locked with a key. These gas caps do not typically come with a new vehicle and are usually replacement gas caps. They work just like any key entry, put the gas cap on, tighten until the clicks sound, and then lock it with the key.

The material of the gas caps

Initially, cork or cloth gaskets were used to ensure the seal was fitted with the gas cap. But, because of wear and tear plus chemical reactions, those types of materials tended to default over time. In modern times, materials like neoprene or polyurethane are used with better resistance measures to ensure a tight seal.

Filler caps consist of an array of materials, including plastic filler caps, steel filler caps, aluminum filler caps, and brass filler caps. The material of construction must have chemical resistance to the fuels encountered. Finishing includes painted, polished or chrome-plated surfaces. Caps may also be left molded or cast. Aesthetic is also a common consideration.
